Lisa L. Owens has been writing for as long as she can remember. While growing up, she recorded the details of her young life in countless diaries. At 13, she won a local writing competition in her hometown of Ottumwa, Iowa—for 50 words on "What America Means to Me"—and took a summer writing workshop for kids at the community college. She has been hooked on studying and practicing the craft of writing ever since.
The UI English-Philosophy BuildingLisa studied English and Journalism at the University of Iowa. She was active in the Society of Professional Journalists, and she also interned at the UI's acclaimed literary journal
The Iowa Review.
The UI School of Journalism and Mass CommunicationAfter college, she wrote features and investigative reports for arts-and-entertainment newspapers in Iowa City and Des Moines. Soon she decided to pursue an editorial career in the educational publishing industry, and for the next decade, she held in-house positions with publishers in Des Moines and Seattle as everything from proofreader to senior editor.
Lisa currently works from her home near Seattle as a writer, editor, and editorial consultant. She has freelanced for publishers nationwide since 1993, and she specializes in writing children's books, short stories, curriculum materials, magazine articles, and book reviews. Lisa is an active member of
Authors Guild and
Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. She has been using the pen name L. L. Owens on her works for children since 1998.
Lisa's extensive editorial credits include books and other materials for all age levels and in many genres, including historical fiction, reference, biography, business, home improvement, and cooking. She offers her editorial consulting services to publishers, businesses, and individual writers, and she serves as national chair of the
Editorial Freelancers Association's education program.

Lisa and Asta
Lisa lives with her husband Tim Johnson, an engineer working in the aerospace industry. Her many interests include reading great books, exploring all types of music, playing the flute, watching classic films, trying new cooking techniques, spending time with friends and family, taking her greyhound Asta on long walks . . . and, of course, WRITING FOR YOU!
