Excerpt from Chapter 7: "The Olympic Games"

People all over the world train for, compete in, and love to watch the Olympic Games. Did you know that they began in ancient Greece?

The first verified records of Olympic Games date from 776 B.C. But literature, such as the Iliad, suggests that the contests occurred even earlier.

The ancient Games were held at Olympia every fourth summer. They honored Zeus, king of the gods. The Greeks took their Games seriously. To some, Olympic contests were more important than battles!
